TIC portfolios came about when a headteacher requested that a teacher she was considering appointing send her a few photographs of her classroom. The teacher didn’t like this idea initially but sent the photos and she was given the job. This set us thinking and talking to other teachers.
More about the TICPortfolios idea>>>
One teacher told us ’In my last job part of the recruitment procedure was to give a lesson to a full science class (30 kids aged 13 or so) in front of the Head and Deputy Head. I got the job but the stress involved was considerable, it also took time (theirs - 45 minutes and the regular interview and hours of mine preparing a lesson for which I was given a vague outline - ’do something on speed’). It turns out that the class had done this topic before so it was a waste of their time and I didn’t feel that my main selling point - my relationship with my regular classes which is usually good and develops over time - was allowed to come through in that scenario.’
Multiply this several times a year and that is a lot of wasted time and energy.
Hence TICPortfolios. Our aim is to help both teachers and recruiters.
Teachers will be able to focus on their key achievements and abilities in a relaxed fashion, over time, to develop an accurate and high quality portfolio of their best work. In particular this will help teachers who do not tend to do well in an interview situation.
Recruiters on the other hand will be able to see very quickly the style and type of teacher applying and will get an accurate idea of whether they would be suitable for the job. They will also be able to show relevant colleagues (such as Heads of Department) a potential teachers portfolio to ask for their opinion, very useful when only the recruiter will travel to the interview.
